“My mother has been a portrait for resilience. Every difficulty we have faced together my mother is the first to bounce right back. Mind you she has her moments of feeling knocked down and every mother does, but this mother she also has her brown skin behind her resilience. Throughout times of her history her brown skin will always be the reason she stands grounded on her on two feet ready for whatever is thrown her way.” Aubrey Butler, NY

“For these pieces, I wanted to represent the three most prominent examples of pain in my life. The pain of my mother when she had a complicated birth with me, the loss of a loved one, and heartbreak. The whole idea of these pieces was to have a healing experience through creating, which I feel is one of the most important aspects of being a creator who feels so much raw emotion.”

The medium is acrylic, flowers, watercolor, collaged paper, and photographs!

“This piece began as a highly personal reflection of moments and situations that have been weighing heavily on the artist. As a healthcare worker during the expansion of the COVID-19 pandemic, she saw potential for the piece's meaning and impact to expand past her own experiences. While still holding its initial meaning to the artist, she has chosen to share her piece so that others may give and find their own meaning in it as well.” Please watch the performance piece on @ShutDownArts

Solitude

Terrelle Jones

Terrelle Jones is a free spirited Brooklyn based artist.  He lives in an ethereal mindset and sometimes refers to himself as "Angel". Subjecting himself to one specific art is something he refuses to do.  He views art as a world meant to be traveled through. There are multiple destinations that should be visited when producing art. He feels its too unfair to label any artist to one set thing as it is an artist duty to create and creations come in all forms, shapes and sizes.  As much as he loves the ethereal world he equally balances it out with absolute chaos. Peace and chaos is the only way he can live in true harmony.  With no set focus in the arts, he explores and roams between different mediums to whatever seems fit during the time. For this project, He wanted to focus on the major shift life has taken into the virtual world. He specifically chose Zoom as many students and employers now have taken this route to continue to fulfill their mission. Being stuck in quarantine and protecting yourself from the outside world, many people fall into their own mind. Some can take it, others cannot. Sometimes being in a box brings out your own shallowness but sometimes it bring out a better you. But through all we should always remain grateful for health and life. This video not only shows the different moods of quarantine but the self love as well. We are all resilient during this time. Being able to adapt into this online world shows how strong you are and capable of always putting your best foot forward. Though things may seem minimal and/or filled with confusion... they always have a greater meaning.

"We Made It Through" is a song written by Kern Smith and his niece Simply Candice. I had the pleasure of singing on it and I treat it as my anthem today. We will make it through this!”

Hello my name is Celestyna Otero I am 16 years old. Here I am showing you a piece I am very proud of. This is a mixed media painting of the Puerto Rican singer and rapper Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio also known as Bad Bunny. In this Piece I used a series of materials such as acrylic paint for the face and hair, ribbon and fabric for his clothes, jewels for the jewelry, and green fabric for the nails. What inspired this piece was the unique style of the artist, he is never afraid to be different as you can tell by his nails. I have always been fond of his music and his rhythm, he expresses his culture differently than other Latin artists.
